FAQ

What are air plants?

Air plants are soil-free plants that absorb water and nutrients through their leaves instead of roots. They naturally grow attached to trees, rocks, and other surfaces.

How do I water my air plant?

Soak your air plant in room-temperature water for 20–30 minutes about once a week. In drier climates, you may need to water more often. (I personally let mine soak in a bowl of water for 5 minutes).

Do air plants need sunlight?

Yes! Air plants thrive in bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct sun for long periods, as it can dry them out.

How do I dry my air plant after watering?

After soaking, gently shake off excess water and place your plant upside down or on its side to dry completely within a few hours. This helps prevent rot. (I place mine on a paper towel afterwards to soak up any extra water).

How often should I water my air plant?

Typically once a week, but:

Hot/dry environments: 2 times per week.

Cool/humid environments: every 10–14 days.

Can I mist my air plant instead of soaking it?

Misting can help between waterings, but it’s usually not enough on its own. Soaking is the best way to fully hydrate your plant.

Do air plants need soil or pots?

Nope! Air plants don’t need soil, which makes them perfect for creative displays like driftwood, shells, hanging holders, or paired with kokedamas.

What temperature do air plants prefer?

They do best in temperatures between 50–90°F. Keep them away from frost and extreme heat.

Why are the tips of my air plant turning brown?

This usually means your plant needs more water or humidity. Try soaking a bit longer or more frequently.

Why is my air plant turning mushy or black?

This is a sign of rot, often caused by too much water sitting in the base. Make sure your plant dries completely after watering.

Do air plants bloom?

Yes! Air plants bloom once in their lifetime, producing a colorful flower. After blooming, they’ll create “pups” (baby plants).

What are pups?

Pups are baby air plants that grow from the base of the mother plant. You can leave them to form a cluster or gently separate them once they’re about 1/3 the size of the parent.

Are air plants pet-safe?

Air plants are generally considered non-toxic to pets, but it’s still best to keep them out of reach to avoid damage to the plant.

Watering Instructions

Air Plants:

Place your air plant in a bowl of warm water. I personally like to press on my air plants to know they're fully submerged. I leave them in the bowl for about 5 minutes. I will scoop them out and shake off the extra water. Then I place them all on a paper towel afterwards to soak up any extra water for 2 - 3 hours or sometimes over night before I place them back.

How Often:

Typically once a week, but:

Hot/dry environments: 2 times per week.

Cool/humid environments: every 10–14 days.
